Vorgee’s Melissa Gorman wins gold in the 5km Open Water at the World Championships in Rome.
Wearing her favourite Vorgee Missile Goggles Melissa upset the reigning Olympic open water champion Larissa Ilchenko with a sprint to the finish line in the 5km race off the Italian coast.
Gorman was leading for most of the race but was challenged by Ilchenko in the last 100m, getting to the front in the surge for the finish line. A battle for the lead ensued over the final metres with Melissa refusing to give up.
As they both reached out for the finishing board, Gorman slapped it, just as Ilchenko's stroke fell short.
At this stage both girls were unsure who had won until officials declared Gorman the winner..
"Larissa has been my idol and to race her and beat her in a sprint finish - I can't believe I actually got there,'' Gorman said. Congratulations Mel.
